Blood Lime Flakes 500 gm
Provenance – this gorgeous fruit is from plantations in Western Australia and in the classic citrus growing area of Roma and through the black plains of Far West Outback NSW the plant grows wild. It is a colonizing species meaning that it loves a bit of good, disturbed soil. Farmers from Roma to Longreach for many years told by The Department of Primary Industry to clear out the Wild Lime Trees as they were classified as a pest – a woody weed classification. We remember when we first tasted them and out taste buds came alive with the incredible lime sourness – amazing! You can taste that same lip puckering zesty lime with a a lovely earthy finish on the back of the palate. We managed to convince one farmer to not remove the trees and allow us to purchase the fruit and we were keen to expand the market for these fruits. We had to fight the cattle off at harvest time as they loved them too. Back then (the early 90’s!) harvesting was a precarious affair with farmers up on ladders harvesting the fruit that surprisingly only grows at the very top of the tree! We have photos! At last, one very enterprising farmer saw the value in this fruit and turned over a sizeable portion of land for a Wild Lime plantation. Mr. Jock Morse from Roma was a pioneer and a hero in the successful grafting and cultivation of Australia’s wonderful Wild Lime or Desert Lime. Amd now others have opened up their own enterprises and often with unique and innovative ways to orchard these amazing trees.
